In an effort to spread helpful information and dispel myths, the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), recently launched the campaign Our Moment of Truth™: A New Understanding of Midwifery Care. The campaign is a national awareness initiative that aims to improve women’s health and maternity care in the United States. As one of our partnering organizations, Lamaze is proud to support ACNM’s initiative by helping to spread the word.
Today, too many women are not getting what they want out of their women’s health care. Our Moment of Truth challenges every woman to find the care she deserves by:
- Encouraging women to become active participants in their health care and learn more about the full range of options available for their women’s health care needs.
- Prompting women to find a provider who can meet their unique health care preferences.
- Re-introducing midwifery care as an important option that should be widely considered and can be the norm for U.S. women.
The campaign was developed after new research released by ACNM showed that many women are not having important conversations with their health care providers about how to maintain their health during pregnancy (62%) or about preparing for motherhood (80%). Results from this survey show a major gap in what women say they want from their health care and what they are getting across a spectrum of health needs.
Midwives are critically important in providing care to women from adolescence to beyond menopause. Even though the general public often associates midwives exclusively with maternity care, many women visit a midwife for a range of services before and after pregnancy. Our Moment of Truth shares tools women need to find the health care provider who can meet their unique needs and offers resources to ask the right questions of their chosen provider, ensuring important dialogue takes place and care decisions are made in partnership.
